Amnesty International: Series of illustrations
and infographics for 'Aftermath' report
Amnesty International required a series of illustrations for their report "Aftermath," which details the systematic and large-scale human rights violations perpetrated by the autonomous authorities of north-east Syria, with support from the US government and coalition partners, against over 56,000 men, women, and children in their custody. These detainees face arbitrary and indefinite detention, enforced disappearance, grossly inhumane conditions, and other serious abuses. Many of them are victims of IS atrocity crimes or human trafficking.
Due to the absence of photographs, illustrations were essential to depict the incidents and experiences of those involved. These illustrations were created based on detailed descriptions from victims and witnesses. A rough, hand-drawn style was chosen to maintain the human element of the stories while avoiding a cartoony appearance that could trivialise the serious issues being discussed in the report.
